Case Study: Soundproof Garden Music Studio Build in Kings Heath, Birmingham 🎡

Bespoke music studio construction | Acoustic design collaboration | Garden studio Birmingham

Some projects are just builds.
Others carry a bit more weight.

This was a bespoke, fully soundproofed garden music studio build in Kings Heath, Birmingham, delivered in collaboration with Atelier 88 Architects and acoustic specialists The Soundproofing Store.

Designed to professional standards, this project combined high-performance acoustic construction, detailed architectural design, and precision-led installation to create a space suitable for serious music production.

🎯 The Brief: A Professional Home Music Studio

Our client Chris β€” a tech professional with a degree in music β€” approached us with a clear vision:

To create a high-spec home recording studio that delivers the performance of a commercial facility, within a residential setting.

This wasn’t a typical garden room.
It was a purpose-built soundproof studio, designed for long-term use and high-level output.

🧠 Acoustic Design & Soundproofing Strategy

The acoustic design was led by Martin Ball of Atelier 88 Architects, whose experience includes work on the MasterChef studios in Birmingham.

The focus of the design was on:

  • Soundproofing (sound isolation) to prevent sound escaping the structure

  • Maintaining acoustic integrity internally for recording and production

  • Reducing structure-borne vibration transfer

We worked closely with both the architect and The Soundproofing Store, ensuring all specified systems and materials were installed in line with design intent.

In projects like this, performance is entirely dependent on correct installation of acoustic systems β€” even minor inconsistencies can compromise results.

πŸ—οΈ Soundproof Construction Build-Up

This was a highly detailed build, far beyond standard garden studio construction.

The structure incorporated:

  • Multi-layered acoustic wall, floor, and roof build-ups

  • High-mass construction methods to improve sound containment

  • Specialist acoustic insulation systems

  • Isolated structural elements to minimise vibration transfer

  • Carefully sealed junctions to eliminate acoustic flanking paths

Every junction, penetration, and fixing point was considered as part of the wider acoustic strategy.

πŸ” Precision Installation & Coordination

Delivering a soundproof studio build requires a different level of discipline compared to standard construction.

This project involved:

  • Tight tolerances across all elements

  • Strict adherence to architectural and acoustic specifications

  • Close coordination between trades and suppliers

  • Careful sequencing to maintain acoustic integrity throughout

There is no margin for error in acoustic construction β€” everything has to be right first time.

πŸŒ™ External Finish: Contemporary Garden Studio Design

Externally, the building was finished in black vertical timber cladding, creating a clean, modern aesthetic that complements the garden setting.

Integrated external lighting enhances the structure at night, giving it a premium, architectural feel.

The result is a modern garden music studio that performs technically while also looking the part.

🀝 The Result: A High-Performance Recording Space

The finished studio delivers:

  • Professional-level soundproofing performance

  • A controlled internal acoustic environment

  • A dedicated space for music production, recording, and creativity

For Chris, this project represents a lifelong ambition realised β€” a purpose-built studio space tailored exactly to his needs.

πŸ’¬ Client Testimonial

Lewis, Laura and the team are great and I can certainly recommend them.

Honestly, when I was first checking them out and saw all the positive reviews, I thought there must be some sort of scam going on β€” nobody can be that good!

Well, after working with them, I can see why their reviews are so stellar.

First off, they turned up every day they said they would and worked hard… I’m told not every building company gets this right to begin with.

Then the care they put into every element was obvious. For example, when Anthony and Ray took up our old brick patio to lay the foundation, they asked if we wanted to keep the bricks. We did β€” so they carefully cleaned each one and stacked them neatly for us. That level of attention to detail was really appreciated.

Any time we had a question, we could email or text Laura and Lewis and always got a prompt, helpful response.

The build itself looks deceptively simple, but underneath is a complex sandwich of soundproofing that the team took real care to get right.

I could go on about all the positives, but I’ll keep it short β€” O’Reilly should absolutely be on your shortlist of potential contractors.

Definitely worth checking out their socials to see the quality of their work.

For us, it was an honour to bring that vision to life.
